15 Spring Home Maintenance Musts
- Clean up the Roof: Cracked or missing shingles should be replaced. Look for buildup of pine needles, leaves, and other debris between roof peaks.
- Check Exterior Walls: Look for damaged areas under eaves and near gutter downspouts. Water stains may indicate gutters are not adequately containing roof runoff.
- Fix the Foundation: Keep eyes peeled for cracks in cement and foundation. You may need to find a foundation specialist if cracks exist.
- Caulk around Windows: Leakage around windows will admit warm summer air and let cooled air escape. Check all caulk and weather stripping and replace if needed.
- Find Leaks: Spring is a great time to check for leaky faucets, clogged drains, and sweaty pipes. Check under all sinks and make sure connection on pipes and hoses are secure
- Prep the AC: Make sure the AC is in good working condition. Change the filter, and check hose connections for leaks.
- Check Attic Space: Search for moisture, insects, or signs of critters. Make sure you have good ventilation and proper insulation to deter mold growth.
- Investigate the Basement: Check the base of poured concrete walls for cracks and evidence of water penetration. Use a flashlight and check exposed framing for tunneling and bug infestation.
- Clean the Windows: Clean the windows inside and out. Repair and clean screens.
- Scrub and Stain the Deck: Look for warped, loose or splintered boards. Remove all debris. If the finish is faded or worn it’s time to clean, stain, and reseal it.
- Start the Lawn Care: Rake lawn, remove all debris and leaves, and fertilize. Consider aerating or power raking for a healthier, thicker lawn.
- Rinse down Patio Furniture: Use mild soap and water to clean. Paint or stain wood furniture or spray rust areas on metal furniture with enamel paint.
- Get your Grill ready: Take apart and clean grate and check burner jets for clogs and obstructions. Check hose connections and fill propane tanks.
- Remember all the Crevices: Clean window casings, baseboards, ceiling fans and blinds.
